What is Microbicidal Paint?

Sherwin- Williams launched Paint Shield®, an EPA- registered microbicidal paint that kills bacteria that is difficult-to-treat, and infection-causing. In just two hours, the painted surface kills the bacteria, helping to prevent it’s spread. This paint has commonly been used in hospitals to slow the spread of hospital-acquired infections like Staph, MRSA, E. coli, VRE, and other bacteria to ensure a clean and sterile space.

Know the Difference

Between Antimicrobial, antibacterial, and microbicidal, it can be confusing to understand how they work differently. Antimicrobial agents in the paint will inhibit the growth and smell of microorganisms like mold or mildew. These microorganisms will often stain and deteriorate the coating over time. Antibacterial agents in the paint will inhibit the growth in bacteria only, and the agents protect just the paint film itself. Finally, microbicidal compounds go a step further, actively killing an array of these microscopic organisms including bacteria and other infection-causing microorganisms.

How it is Tested

Paint Shield®’s microbicidal properties required the product to be registered with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) — and that meant comprehensive third-party testing. The tests consisted of a longevity test, a continuous kill test, a washability test, and a toxicological review. From running these tests, they were able to pinpoint how long the paint will last once applied, how much the paint can take, and how it is affected by common cleaning products over time. The Toxicological review verified that all the components in the product are EPA approved and are in compliance with human health and environmental guidelines.

How Long it Lasts

Paint Shield® has the ability to effectively kill pathogens for up to four years as long as the integrity of the paint is maintained and will continuously kill the bacteria at a rate of 90 percent. The washability test vigorously put the paint through all common cleaning products and then retested its effectiveness. The exclusive technology in Paint Shield® shows the culmination of extensive research and collaboration between Sherwin-Williams and expert microbiologists.
